Off to see hellboy last night with [livejournal.com profile] cryx and[livejournal.com profile] barty. Sadly the only low-light canoodling I got was with myself, but I suppose I can't have everything.

As for Hellboy, I've seen better films this year but I don't think I've seen any I've enjoyed more overall. The J Jonah Jameson scenes in Spiderman 2 are probably individually better than anything in HB, but as a complete piece Hellboy is this years popcorn FX-fest of choice - at least as far as I'm concerned. I mean: Rasputin, The Antichrist, and Clockwork Zombie Nazi Fetish Ninjas. What is there not to like about that?
Ron Perlman is wonderfully cast as an Insouciant, Surly Antichrist-with-a-heart-of Gold, and he provides a solid cornerstone to a sharp and wittily scripted film which admittedly doesn't have many shocks but does have more heart than anything George Lucas or Steven Spielberg have churned out in the last decade or more. That the film is a labour of love between Guilliermo del Toro (Dorector) and Mike Mignola (Creator) shows clearly throughout and the fanboy enthusiasm which they've infused the film warmed my notoriously chill and flinty heart.
Okay, so the ending is a bit quick and something of a cop out (1) Lovecraft increasingly has a lot to answer for, and 2) I'm sure Cthulhu is tougher than that), and there are some inconsistencies in the narrative if you really want to go looking for them, but, for me, the cheery, gung-ho enthusiasm of the whole thing carried me happily through my box of popcorn very comfortably indeed.

I particularly liked the bit where he's lamenting his relationship woes over milk and cookies to the kid :)

*Bounce* Can't wait to see Hellboy. Darklittlefox lent me the entire collection when I was poorly and ever since then I have been in a frenzy of anticipation ;)
How do you choose how to add people to your Friends list - do you need to meet them first, or what? Just curious ;)

I loved it :). How pretty was the aqua guy? I'm sure that the same team that did him, did Sonny in I,Robot. There's something similar about style there.

I was sure I recognised the voice he had from something else, but I couldn't recognise him at all, after a bit of further investigation I discovered the voice actor wasn't actually credited and it was in fact David Hyde Pierce - The legacy of Frasier lives on! I thought it was familiar. :)

Mr Me and I had a massive argument about that! I knew it was him (for I love him) but Philip is all noooo. It took the mighty power of Empire magazine for him to concede to my superiority!

You rolled the magazine up tightly and beat him with it?

It is incredibly hard to take the film with so much as a pinch of credulity, even for a super-hero comic-inspired flick. At times it does look like the cast are having trouble keeping a straight face during dialogue that relates to the actual story of the film.

"Rasputin keeps on being brought back from the dead by his immortal lover and her gimp nazi power ranger sidekick, and they try to open a gate to hell, again."

When they put together the plot for this film, they were certainly burning something at both ends, but it wasn't anything candle-related.
