State of Washington 57th Legislature 2002 Regular Session

AN ACT Relating to the teaching of the theory of evolution in the
common schools of the state of Washington; and adding a new section to
chapter 28A.230 RCW.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

{+ NEW SECTION. +} Sec. 1. A new section is added to chapter
28A.230 RCW to read as follows:
(1) The legislature finds that the Enabling Act for the state of
Washington requires that the state Constitution not be repugnant to the
principles of the Declaration of Independence.
(2) The Declaration of Independence declares the self-evident truth
that all men are created. The Declaration of Independence also
declares that our rights are endowed by the Creator, and that
governments are instituted among men to secure these God-given rights.
(3) The Preamble to the Washington state Constitution also
acknowledges the Supreme Ruler of the Universe as the grantor of our
liberties.
(4) Article I, section 1 of the Washington state Constitution also
declares that governments are established to protect and maintain
individual rights, which rights are already acknowledged in the
preamble as being granted by the Creator.
(5) RCW 28A.405.030 requires all teachers to teach the principles
of truth and to instruct their pupils in the principles of free
government in the common schools of the state of Washington. The self-
evident truth that all men were created and endowed by their Creator
with unalienable rights and that governments are accountable both to
the Creator and the people to secure those rights is the foundation of
all political, civil, and religious liberty in America.
(6) Both the United States Constitution and the Washington state
Constitution were instituted to protect rights endowed by the Creator.
(7) All state legislators in the state of Washington swear an oath
to uphold the Constitutions of the United States and the state of
Washington.
(8) The legislature finds that the teaching of the theory of
evolution in the common schools of the state of Washington is repugnant
to the principles of the Declaration of Independence and thereby
unconstitutional and unlawful.
(9) All textbooks and curriculum that teach the theory of evolution
shall be removed from the public schools forthwith and replaced with
textbooks and curriculum that teach the self-evident truth of creation.

It hasn't become law yet... because the entire Legislature has better things to do. Since the Legislature adjourned on March 14, 2002, this particular nutcase is going to have to try again next year.

This motherfucker can go back to his district, and show off his original draft, the one that you mentioned above, and tell all his christian fundamentalist republican supporters that he tried (see!) but he was defeated by those godless democrats in committee, but if they elect him again next year, maybe he'll have better luck...

Write a bullshit treatise, guarentee job security. Hmmm. Maybe y'all should ship the robot over here, he'd never have to work a day in his life again. :)

you know a whole load of christians who have acutally sat down and thought about things for about 5 minutes, rather than just regurgetated up a load of 1000 year old dogma, have found out that there is absolutly nothing in Darwin that negates or disproves god having created everything, especially those that took the time to read the old hebrew that the verses were origionally written in and that find out that 'day' is actually rather a misnomer and would be better replaced with the word 'age'.

Ah, but you misunderstand the thinking; the '1000 year old dogma' displays your ignorance of the situation. The basic tenet of most modern fundamentalist sects is that they have the most 'accurate' translation of the Bible - that 'their' translation is the accurate one, as the guy who wrote it was guided by the hand of God and nobody elses. So the original Hebrew & Greek has been translated for them by God Himself, and as a result they dont' *need* any other copy or translation.

It was a handy solution to a problem I know a few of us had... what to do when the person is liked, yet his actions are despised? Remind ourselves that it's not his fault, he simply lacks free will. Getting angry at the motive for his actions now has the moral equivalent of getting angry at an alcoholic locked in a bar overnight... of course he drank half the stock. It's what he does.

Now, nothing saying you can't get angry at the actions themselves... if I was that bar owner, I'd be pissed that I just lost half my inventory... but no more anger at the root of the problem, because it's just the way things are.

Factoid: In the original Hebrew & Greek, it's "Thou shalt not suffer a poisoner to live." which makes total sense, if you're a desert community. Poisoning a well would be about as bad as a non-religious sin could get. King James specifically had it mistranslated to "Witches" after coming to the conclusion that the only way someone back then could poison an entire water supply without getting caught would be by using magic.

Well, that interpretation of poisoner is a lot older than King James (although he supported that interpretation, as he *hated* witches). That interpretation of magic/poison can still be seen in tribal/desert/nomadicv cultures today, where people are persecuted for making the cows sick or the water tainted. In many ways, the two ideas are synonymous within a certain sort of lifestyle.
