Courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] puddingcat working for the corporate sponsors, several off us buzzed off to see the Art Deco exhibition at the Victoria & Albert yesterday, [livejournal.com profile] puddingcat, [livejournal.com profile] ukmonty, one half of [livejournal.com profile] jessandcraig and myself and sister. The exhibition itself was excellent, if remarkably small - only three rooms before being unceremoniously dumped into the museum shop to be parted with silly money for tat.
There were, however, some remarkable omissions, not least both Nazi and Stalinist design - totalitarian regimes having grabbed Art deco in some forms with both hands - and also early Disney work Mickey Mouse is surely an Art deco icon in and of himself. However, there was newsreel footage of Josephine Baker dancing topless, so my afternoon was not completely lost (my dad actually met her once, the lucky old sod, but he is incapable of understanding why someone might find this interesting).
The worst part of it, of course, were the hordes of slow moving tourists, one of whom (an American lady, whose arse was so large as to have made an interesting study in tectonic plate movement in and of itself) observed wisely "Oh my Gaaahd...it's just so retro".
And that, ladies and gentlemen, summed up that.

Thence to Harvey Nicks food hall, where I caused myself a mischief in the wallet from which I do not expect to recover in a hurry, and then home for tea and biscuits, and to hear Monty immortally observe that there 'Really is nothing as good as Anal Abrasion."
I think you probably needed to be there.
