The scene: It is 1981. Angus Young, Brian Johnson, and 'Mutt' Lange have just finished laying down the tracks for AC/DC's new album, 'Back in Black', and are sitting round the studio chatting.

Lange: Lads. This is, without a doubt, one of the best albums ever. Every single track an absolute killer, a classic of the genre. 'Hells Bells', 'Back in Black', 'You shook me all night long', 'Heatseeker', 'Thunderstruck', 'Money Talks'...they're all great.
Johnson: Whyaye, thank'ye Mutt. We're reet prood of 'em oorselves.
Lange: I just have to know - what do you have lined up next? I mean...I've seen the other stuff you're working on and it's all fairly poor. Right now you've got this absolute killer album, but what are you going to follow it with?
Angus: I hadn't thought of that...I've just used up all my best riffs...
Lange: That's what I was worried about. All you've got left now is the chaff that didn't make the cut. You're next album is going to suck if that's all you've got left.
Johnson: Shite. We dinnae wanna be one hit wonders, like. I've oonly just joined the band!
Lange: Have no fear. I've got this great idea...
Angus: Yes?
Lange: Why not put a few of the killer tracks on Back in Black - say the title track, one or two others? And then save the rest of the best you've written for future albums. Put one or two on each, and just fill them up with any old crap. That way you've got twenty years worth of material in front of you.
Johnson: Brilliant! that way we've got some space to fill on Back in Black - we could put "Giving the Dog a Bone' on it! That's a load of old shite and it goes on for ages!
Lange: And then you could put 'Heatseeker' on your next album, and maybe 'Thunderstruck' on the one after that...
Angus: And if we never ever put out a 'Greatest Hits' compilation, our fans will have to buy all our albums for a few killer tracks!
Johnson: We're on the gravy train for life! Thanks, Mutt!

Twenty Years later...

David popped "The Razors Edge" out of his CD player and glared at it. "Why the Hell", he thought, "do AC/DC only put one or two good songs on each album and fill up the rest with crap?"

And that's the way it happened.
