Things I like
Jun. 23rd, 2006 09:30 amContinuing with my theme of 'cheer on LJ' this week, I've decided to pimp some really great stuff. I'm not normally very effusive, but some things are good enough that it deserves wider recognition.
First up we've got
stupidlondon. Being a comprehensive guide to made up facts about London to tell to foreign tourists, Stupid London is, well, just plain stupid. There's enough stuff on there which I wish I'd written to make me genuinely envious of the talents of the author. Go and read it today.
Second, we have the utterly fantastic Russian writer Boris Akunin. Massively popular in his native Russia, Akunin's first series of books (Winter Queen, Turkish Gambit, Murder on the Leviathan and The Death of Achilles) about the Russian Imperial Agent Erast Fandorin has sold more than ten million copies, and it's not hard to see why. Tremendous fun and imperial age derring-do abounds as the heroic Fandorin undercovers villanous plots by the rotten British Empire to undermine the glorious Tsar, all leavened with a healthy dose of farcical humour and utterly morbid Russian fatalism. My favourite writing discovery of 2006.
And third we've got Le Bouchon, which does the best steak frites in London, for my money.
Try them all today!
