I was reminded yesterday of the sex-cult based upon the writings of heroic-fantasy and soft porn author John Norman which the police investigated in Sunderland several months ago. For the uninitiated, John Norman writes the GOR series of books which now stretches to as many as 30 volumes*. These books detail the adventures of Tarl Cabot on the ‘counter-Earth’ (a planet which rotates in the same orbit as our Earth, but on the other side of the sun) where women are kept as utterly subjugated sex slaves. Hilarity naturally ensued when it was discovered by police that people (mostly fat middle-aged men and teenaged boys, as you’d expect) living out a subculture based on these books were discovered on a council estate in Sunderland, and bemusement ensued when it was discovered that the women involved seemed to be doing so of their own free will. This group were called the Kaotians, and appear to be a splinter group of a wider society of Goreans who broke away when it became clear that the original group just weren’t treating all this heroic fantasy-cum-slavery stuff with the seriousness it deserved, or something.
Quite frankly, I’d believe pretty much anything about them right now.

Now, if people can form sex cults around John Norman then they can form sex cults about anything, and that got me wondering which other sci-fi staples people out there might be living their sex lives based on.

The Whovites: This society is based around the endless sexual possibilities created by women being chased down wobbly corridors by men in rubber suits, and the humourous double-entendres of the phrase “Sonic Screwdriver”.

Trekians: Women are required to cover themselves in green body paint. Men given the designation ‘Captain’ get to hump anything they like, whilst men in red shirts aren’t asked back.

The Losties: Losties fly to exotic locations and pretend to be cut off from civilised behaviour, which allows them to drink and screw to their heart’s content without considering the consequences. Also known as ‘Club 18-30’.

Avengians: Couples in this subculture never actually seem to have sex, they just have a permanent post-coital glow and communicate in witty bon mots.

Battlestar Galacticans: Recently split between ‘original’ and ‘new’ Galaticans, it is not known what, if any, sexual practices take place in this group. This is because the ‘original’ group is comprised entirely of bearded men in their thirties and no members of the ‘new’ group have hit puberty yet. Rumour has it that both groups are hoping for sexually compliant female robot slaves to be invented as soon as possible.

The Voyagers: Only three members of this subculture are known to exist and they still live with their mothers. The only evidence that they indulge in any sexual activity are the lengthy, bragging and highly graphic emails they send to each other, often written without punctuation as if they were only typing with one hand.

Gaimantians: Members of this group, called ‘goths’ dress like Dream of the endless and hump anything which stops moving for long enough. They then post interminably self-indulgent, angsty posts about doing so on livejournal before going off and doing the whole thing all over again.**

So, which sci-fi sex cults do you know of, readers?

*When I was about 13 I read more than 20 of these books and know more about this than I might like. Accusations that this may have slightly affected my personality are groundless.
