Gott in Himmell!
Nov. 8th, 2006 09:54 amIt's an article of faith in the UK that our television is just plain better than that produced anywhere in the world. Oh, how we guffaw at the comical rubbish which foreigners put out, and how we pity the USA for having 675 channels, all of which are identical. Yes, there are exceptions like The Simpsons, Frasier, and The West Wing, but everyone in blighty knows that foreign TV just isn't as good as ours.
Back in the early 1990s, satellite and cable TV was just taking off in the UK and the two main competitors for the market were Rupert Murdoch's Sky and the independant British Satellite Broadcasting (BSB). These days it seems almost inconceivable that the lumbering behemoth of Sky could ever have been challnged in the market, but for a while it seemed like the battle for audience could go either way. However, BSB's undoing was that it's programming was, if this can be believed, even worse than Sky's. Audiences were so low that TV had to be made on a shoestring and so production values, scripting and ideas were all bargain basement.
Perhaps BSB's nadir was the sitcom Heil Honey, I'm home!. A spoof of the American sitcoms of the 50's and 60's, Heil Honey I'm Home featured Adolf and Eva Hitler living in a suburban home in Berlin next door to the Jewish Mr. & Mrs. Goldstein with Hilarious ResultsTM
In the wake of unprecedented complaints and pathetic justifications ("But Hitler is always the loser and he's shown to be an idiot!"), only one episode was ever broadcast, and the show has entered the realms of TV apocrypha. BSB deleted all their copies and Heil Honey I'm Home, to the relief of all involved, was believed gone forever. A whispered legend which is only mentioned when suggestions for the worst TV show ever, ever, ever are mooted.
Until now, when someone has found a taped copy and uploaded it in its entirety to YouTube.
