Talking last night about the structure of the novel, the point came up that as it developed as a form of writing in the c18/c19 novels would often be structured as first-person narratives, either as correspondences (My dear ------, things have taken another turn and as I put my pen to paper to tell you of the events of last night my hands shake...), or as some form of journal entry or storytelling ("So Carruthers and I took up our rifles and set off into the jungle to seek the lost idol of M'kenja-Bubwele.").
As a writing style this declined with the development of the novel - the first 'modern novel' is widely regarded as Cervantes' Don Quixote and that's written largely in the third person, and most novels you'll find in WHSmith now are written in the same way - the first-person narrative style of writing has declined, possibly as a result as the keeping of diaries and the writing of letters has declined too.
However, blogs are growing and novels are starting to explore the blog format with varying degrees of success - Belle du Jour, Abby Lee, Xiaolu Guo and others have all tried the blog format; some better than others. However, it's fair to say that no novel in this new format has yet achieved the same success as the first-person narratives of, say, Samuel Richardson or Arthur Conan Doyle.

So just how would classics of the old-style literary canon written in the first-person format look if written as blogs now?
