Hey, in many ways modern society is great- lowest crime level in 600 years (actually, I would say ever but we do not have accurate crime figures from the Roman period- certainly the rate of murder has been dropping since recorded history began), medical revolutions that has extended human life span hugely, the idea (radical and new though it is) that humans are actually entitled to be "happy", electricity (great thing), TV, RPG's... yep, Modern Society is pretty darn good. But it comes with a price- part of that price is of course the songs of "2Unlimited", the existance of the Daily Mail, and a civilisation which is currently wonderfully bemused most of the time- a reactionary society obsessed with beauty, self and image. hey, on the great scale of things that's a damn good society to live in... as you say, could be MUCH worse. But that don't mean we don't have an obligation to push the boundries and try and tweak it now and then. I mean... after all...
It only GOT this good because people tweaked it!
(Notice the precise wording- tweak- not 'overthrow' which leads to nothing bar even more reactionary civilisations which always justify massacring children somewhere along the lines... tweaking is MUCH more civilised. A bit like 'pottering'. )
