Over time, the free market drives out inefficiency. People select better products at a lower price because it's in their interest to do so. Suppliers whe innovate prosper, those who don't, don't.
Food is cheaper because the countryside is no longer a bucolic scene of buxom milkmaids and soforth, it's a a food factory. Oh, and because we subsidise the hell out of agriculture to keep the French happy and inefficient, and the Africans poor.
