Can anyone tell me what American Airlines are like?
My usual airlines of choice (BA and Vurgin) don't fly direct to St Louis and so I might have to fly with a lesser airline. Are they any good, or would the extra travel time on BA be rewarded with extra comfort & facilities?

They were awful. We flew with them a few years ago when we went back to Portland. The plane looked like it was falling apart, the stewardesses were the mothers of Neandertal and there was no space at all.
Continental trans-Atlantic and US Airways are both pretty good. Failing that, Lufthansa were suitable.
