Can anyone tell me what American Airlines are like?
My usual airlines of choice (BA and Vurgin) don't fly direct to St Louis and so I might have to fly with a lesser airline. Are they any good, or would the extra travel time on BA be rewarded with extra comfort & facilities?

I'm not as picky as your good self...
But they've always treated me right.

I like them. I have flown with them several times, but this was all before September 11th that fateful year.

extra leg room

American Airlines make a big song and dance about having extra leg room, and the food seems to be fairly airline standard. I actually like them better than BA. So, yes, worth saving the travel time

They've been okay for me, not wonderful but reasonable food (ie - its edible) and not too crampt, reasonable service...and they have London Pride, which is almost beer...

Don't do it!

They were awful. We flew with them a few years ago when we went back to Portland. The plane looked like it was falling apart, the stewardesses were the mothers of Neandertal and there was no space at all.

Continental trans-Atlantic and US Airways are both pretty good. Failing that, Lufthansa were suitable.

We flew American airlines to St. Louis in January and they were great! Food was yum :D
The only problem we has was as it was the Week Of Much Snow, we were delayed by a day getting out of Heathrow as BA had taken up all the de-icing machines. So as long as it isn't snowing here, then it will be fine...

AA is fair:

- The extra leg room is nice, but doesn't do me much good for sleep (that angle just makes me slide lower into the seat, which compresses the spine and bends the lower back ... in a word, 'ouch')

- The food is quite good, but I wouldn't rate it excellent. Better than China Airlines though! ;-)

- In Economy-class, one has to pay for one's alchoholic beverages ... something that put me off a bit.

- The film is old-style, on a shared screen...rather than the seat-back screens with games - as per Virgin Atlantic.

- There is a dearth of telephones per seat as well, most bad in Economy seats on domestic flights.

- AA's hub is Dallas/Ft. Worth ... a nice airport, but on some flights, it adds unnecessary hours to one's journey.

- The Atlantic arrival point is forcibly JFK, unfortunately (Gods curse the damnable place).

... still, much better off than United, I'm sorry to say.

Have you anything to add on KLM? I haven't flown them in years, and heard of the recent Air France buy-out...

I flew with them in 2001, just over a month after 11th of September. Food was quite good. Service was a bit lousy, though. None of the flight attendants were under 50 and every time you wanted something they were really really bothered to have to get up from their coffee it seemed. There was only one cool attendant, a huge black woman who probably cooks a mean gumbo at home ;o) but she rarely was in my section.
I think there were only drinks with the meals, any extra you had to specifically ask for and only non-alcoholics were free IIRC.
That doesn't bother me too much as I rather stay sober on a journey that takes a lot out of me in the first place.

Not sure about leg space, I had a whole row to myself so wasn't really bothered. Besides, my legs are short. ;o)

Very important for Dave: No extras or goodies or toys or games. There was a screen on the backrest in front of you, though.

Airline Suggestion

Have you looked into Delta airlines?

They have frequent flights from Heathrow, and one of their major hubs is Atlanta, which is a rather nice, newer airport that accepts international arrivals (avoids JFK) ... moreover, being in the south, it's a fairly good jumping point for St. Louis.

If I'm going to fly on a flight where I have to transfer, I'll go with BA or Virgin & change in NY. The question I'm pondering is do I fly direct and save £50 plus a few hours.

I'm not sure you can fly directly - I know there are 'hubbed' gateways for US entry by flight.
