I have a stinking cold and so may not go. However...

As I am sure you are all aware, this years conker championship is coming in Berkeley Square on Saturday 11th of October at 11am. Despite the concerns that have been voiced by some of you over the difficulties with this year's crop, (see clipping below) the tournament will go ahead as usual.

The normal rules regarding stampsies, chugs and conker preservation will apply (see below ). Dress is up to you, although history has shown that the more smartly dressed competitors have fared better in the tournament.

Entry will be £10 which will furnish you with bountiful conkers and a glass of wine or two (a veritable bargain considering the price which conkers are trading at on ebay at present - see clipping below). The majority of the entry fee will go to Hanbury, a charity for the London homeless, which helps them back into employment.

There will be bottles of wine for sale at £10 on the day and we will as usual be heading on for a spot of luncheon afterwards in a suitable establishment nearby.

To anyone unsure of the finer points of conker play or uncertain regarding any specific terminology, I would suggest they approach the nearest male toff and inquire politely.

Please invite all friends, relatives, waifs and strays. The more the merrier.

RULES:

The rules (hereafter referred to as the ‘Berkeley Square Rules’) are as follows:

General rules

1. All participants will pay a £10 entry fee, the winner receiving a prize and all proceeds going to a charity for the London homeless
2. The entry fee will entitle the participant to select his or her conkers from the communal sack
3. Participants may ‘bring their own’ conkers in addition to those selected above and subject to the rules specified below.
4. The entry fee will also include a glass or two of wine.

Specific Conker rules

1. No conker may be boiled or soaked in vinegar.
2. Conkers may be baked if so desired.
3. ‘Stampseys’ are permitted.
4. In the event of ‘Tips’ the person who shouts first plays the next shot.
5. No ‘chugs’ are permitted.
6. Strings must be knotted at the bottom of the conker, not tied around the conker
7. A missed shot results in the opponent playing the next shot.
8. Frayed strings may be replaced and do not count as a win to the opponent.
9. In the event of both conkers being annihilated simultaneously, the conker with the higher number of wins takes the honours, and its score bestowed on the next conker selected.
Conkers lost in combat are considered beaten unless found within reasonable time.

It's the fruit of the Horse Chestnut tree. It grows in a green spiky fibrous shell, but these dry up, split & fall off at the beginning of autumn. Conkers (http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/470000/images/_472835_conkers150.jpg) are anything up to 2" across, and hard. Just right for schoolboy games :) (http://www.bupa.co.uk/intercom/images/img_conkers.jpg)

As the lady said. You put them on pieces of string and then hit them against each other :)
The first one to break loses.
A popular british schoolchild game before the advent of gameboys :)
