I just spent a while hitting the random LJ button, seeing what people who aren't me make on the world. The terrifying thing about it was that in a sizeable proportion of the journals - perhaps 80% of the sites I saw - the first or second post would be a diatribe against small, meaningless problems and setbacks of life, how angry or 'pissed' the poster is, or just a general dissatisfaction with life; ill-thought-out and formless, but just there.

And as usual, people aren't doing anything about these problems, they seem just to be posting about them.

So I got to thinking, and what I got thinking was: Isn't life great?

When you get down to it. It is. Go on, admit it. Life is fantastic. Yeah, yeah, so stuff goes wrong, life never turns out the way you wanted, and frankly feeling like you're lonely and nobody really understands is part of the package of having a frontal cortex. But underlying that there is the astonishing beauty to be found everywhere - in the relections in a drop of water, in the subtle interplays of tone in music, in thoughts and words and subatomic particles the singing of blood in your veins and shiny objects...oooh, shiny objects...

Let's have none of that 'glass: half full or half empty?' nonsense, but lets just consider for a moment how cool it is to get given a glass in the first place, be it as a result of random chance, higher intelligence, or your parents drunkenly having it away.

I've rattled on here before about the vanishingly small statistical chance that you exist, so I won't do that. I'll just look about myself with a vacant, bemused expression and remind myself of just how great existence is, regardless of the things that might not go quite how I might like. No matter how bad things get, surely the feel of the warm sun on your face on a summers day makes it all worthwhile.

Have you ever tried the 'person with whom you have most interests in common' button? I think you need to have a paid account.

Initially I got someone very strange and had to take Alexander the Great off my list of interests because it disturbed me. (I remain interested in Alexander the Great but don't have a lot in common with white supremacists who can't spell).

The guy I get now sounds really pleasant and interesting. He's a chaos Magickian (vaguely thelemite) somewhere on the Western side of the States, he has a nice sounding girlfriend and he likes ice cream. He posts interesting things (like the key to Magickal Geek Codes) and never whinges.

I recommend him.

Oh, and I tend to attribute the whingeing to extreme youth. They will grow out of it - eventually.

oooh, chaos magic...now there is a fast way to raise my blood pressure :)

I treid the most interests function some time ago, and thanks to my list being farily generic I got whingy teenagers in Milwaukee or somewhere. Fie!

Just wandered in from my friends of friends page

can I just ask where the who you share most interests with button might be as I have a paid account but I can't see where it might be?

thanks

ps davywavy your right, life is wonderful people should just stop worrying about it and have some fun but unfortunately I don't think that is going to convince most of the angst ridden people on livejournal but thankfully they aren't my problem
