I know what you're thinking: "That happens to me all the time, David. It's called Spam."

A while ago, whilst boozing it up with my bird, the idea came up that I should put myself onto an online dating site in order to see what happened. After an abortive attempt to do so (which resulted in me signing up to an adult contacts site with the wrong email address, so someone out there is in for a bit of a shock), I finally got round to adding myself to one of the more 'decent' sites, and thought no more of it*. After all, presumably women on these sites get inundated with replies from single, predatory men and would feel no particular need to mail a fellow themselves, would they?

Or so I thought.

Checking my mail a day or two ago, I found I'd got a reply to my entry which I duly checked out and found a naked photo in my mailbox.
It was sent from a girl who apparently doesn't live all that far from me. Walking distance, certainly.

I went through a string of reactions; firstly trepidation - how to explain to [livejournal.com profile] puddingcat that women are sending me pictures of themselves in the altogether. However, I'm glad that she found the whole thing pretty funny and as yet has failed to belt me with a frying pan, which is her usual reaction to me making calf-eyes at other women.
Secondly, I was amused, but more of that later.
Finally, curious. However, it turns out that I have to cough up £20 to the website for a membership to get this girl's contact details and
a) Jenny would spifflicate me if I did,
b) All her friends would help, and
c) If can't pull in Wandsworth for less than £20 then I'm doing something seriously wrong.

When I first started thinking of posting about this, I was going to be quite mocking of the girl and possibly post her picture so you could all see it. Since then, I've thought better of it. With the best will in the world, she's not a pretty lass and I have to wonder just how desperate someone would have to be before they'd start thinking that sending nude pictures to complete strangers over the internet is a good foundation for a respectful and lasting relationship. Part of me is tempted to shell out the £20 and take her to the pub to find out just how bad things have got for her, and explain gently that perhaps her strategy of flashing her bits is not the best way of making lasting friendships.

I say part of me is tempted. The part of me that would have to open my wallet and spend £20 isn't tempted in the slightest, and so I post about it in a middle class hand-wringing sort of way.

*I'm not saying which site I'm using, but lets face it, Davywavy isn't that difficult a name to find if you want to go looking.

If it's any consolation, 'she' is probably an overweight Ugandan bloke who found the picture on another site and is trying to get your money.

My first reaction to reading this is that the email of the woman in her birthday suit is probably a marketing ploy designed to get you to cough up the readies. If you imagine the theory to be "enough single blokes will be willing to pay the money, especially if they think it is genuine and not just a cover girl" then the practice will be to spam every male registered on the site. One test may be to set up a dummy account to see if it is repeated. You then get to exchange a few emails before everything trails off. If I am being really cynical, I would suggest it could be a prostitute advertising her wares. That's my impression anyway.

Yes, I had also considered the possibility that this might be the case - however, chatting with another LJer over IRC earlier (won't say who because they might not want it known they advertise...) they had been on these sites for years and not had a single response. I suspect that my occupation as 'Company Director' might make me more attractive in the eyes of people who don't know me.

You could recruit her into the Cam & claim the prestige...

ANd I wouldn't "spifflicate" you; I'd just mock you mercilessly for falling for an online scam :p

You'll be needing a paid account. Beyond that, I'm not sure at all as I don't have one myself.
