For want of more time to write, I'll fill LJ space today by asking you all a question:

"What is the highest compliment that anyone could pay you?"

Probably naming their child after me. Or appointing me to a well paid but low responsibility position in a wealthy mega-corporation. Or a parade, that'd be pretty good.

Telling me that they thought I was a good author/poet.
Or telling me that they love me (even in just the friendship sense.)

"I love your writing, and want to hire you full time so that you don't have to work at a day job again."

one that is unexpected ...

Unexpected compliments are often the nicest... especially when they are from people who know you well, and suddenly feel obliged to say something nice....

I think probably the best compliment I've had is from my other half saying I look sexy / think / good... because they are someone who sees me evey day, and they've seen something they wanted to comment on.

a hardie

You know the title of your reply could be taken as a double-entendre?

Depends.

On who it is, the situation, the timing, & the frequency & number of previous compliments.

e.g. from someone who always compliments my intelligence, "you look great" would be good. From someone who only knows me socially, "I never knew you were so clever" would work. Naming a child after me would just be weird. Naming a kitten after me would be sweet :) A tarantula? I think I'd like it...
