From the sublime to the ridiculous.
May. 27th, 2004 09:36 amFaced with a challenge to write a story that describes the phrase 'from the sublime to the ridiculous' in under 150 words, my first bash came up with this...
Carstairs took an appreciative sniff of his glass of Yquem 1892 and turned to his companion. “I say, Carruthers”, he said. “To say this tribe has never seen an outsider before, they certainly know how to put on a spread.”
Carruthers, his mouth full of Foie gras aux truffes, simply nodded in agreement.
Finally the two completed their first course and watched expectantly as the village chef hurried from his hut across the glade, carrying a silver salver with pride.
“If only Coco the Clown were here to enjoy this too,” said Carruthers. “Dam’ fool move, wandering into the bush like that. Wonder what happened to him.”
The chef arrived at their table and, with a flourish, whipped the top off the salver to reveal an enormous foot, broiled to a turn and topped forlornly with a single, red nose.
