I seem to remember that underwear hadn't yet evolved to the point of being a seperate garment. I think she would have worn two separate long legged bloomer type affairs which tied at the waist, thus giving a "split crotch" type affair.
Of course, I have no idea where I remember this from, so it could be complete rubbish.
This is right, and I've seen some when we cleared out my great grandmother's room after she died (she kept her old ones) but I'm guessing even that counts as underwear.
I'm waiting for some unpleasant fact to come out eg she couldn't bend over in a corset to take them down to go to the toilet, so she had to have none so she could lift her skirts and... er.. squat or sommat.
