Although I say at gencon every year that I will not do this again, every year I come back and do it again.Tthe odd thing about GenCon this year was that it was good fun - something that has been missing from the atmosphere for some time.
As such I cam e back with a veritable fizzing noise from the bit of my brain where the thinking happens as I've got several ideas of what to run next year. And I thought you lot, as potential players, should get the opportunity to influence what I write for you. So I've got three ideas...and a poll.

Game 1:
Vietnam: 1968
It's the eve of the Vietnamese New Year and the NVA are massing on the border for what will be the biggest co-ordinated miliary action since D-Day. In Forward Firebase Delta X-Ray, rival Colonels John 'Hannibal' Smith and William Kurtz have wildly differing ideas on what their men should do. Meanwhile the men pursue their different motivations; Corporal Pez insists on wearing his lucky red shirt with a week to go before mustering out, Stringfellow Hawke And 'Howling Mad' Murdoch fight over who will be pilot on the last flight out, and will someone please take that bow off John Rambo?
"The last Plane to Clarksville" A true-life LARP depicting the reality of the Vietnam War.

Game 2:
Texas 1902.
The British may rule the stars, but American know-how is turning this backwater country into a powerhouse. In Cade County, Texas, a mysterious explosion has turned the old swimmin' hole into the richest oil strike in the state. Now the great and good have come to get the claims; John D. Rockefeller and Dale Carnegie in person. But who does own the rights to the ol' swimmin hole? Is it Old Jesse Duke and his Duke boys? Grandpa Jones of Jonestown, perhaps? Ma Baker and her Baker Boys? Or old Mr. Willikins, the Carny owner?
Will the locals be divdied by the promise of wealth? Or will the team up, possibly to form:
"The League of Ornery Gentlemen"
A gaming Pean to every shotgun-toting grizzled old timer with a short temper who ever strode the silver screen, set in the same universe and "Mars or Bust!"

Game 3:
Hollywood 1978.
It's the golden era for the adult entertainment industry, and everyone who is anyone has shown up to the wrap party for Swedish Porn Auteur Hugh Jdik's latest Magnus Opus. But in this seedy world everyone is out for themselves, and when Hugh is found dead the fur is sure to fly!
"PORNO: The RPG". A LARP game you wouldn't want your children to play. For that matter, I really wouldn't recommend this game to anyone who has any standards.

Sorry, I'm an old-school Monkees fan, so I had to vote for 1 just because of the reference. Plus the idea of red-shirts in Vietnam is just funny.

It's always the Corporal who gets killed first.

So what was the relevance of the 'Last Train to Clarksville'?

Good question. I'll be honest and admit that you've got me there.

One moment...
...
Google has failed me. I would guess Clarkesville would contain a military base from which people were shipped off to Vietnam, though I could be wrong. It had a "Going to War" feeling to it, even before I knew much about that era.

Excellent inference, and quite correct. Clarkesville was the main embarkation camp for troops sent to Vietnam - hence the line in the song: "I don't know if I'm ever coming home."

Hence why I always thought it was a rather sad song, and felt it was either a going to war song or a running away song. I just never made the connection with that era, nor knew about Clarkesville Base.

Now if only they could get Dwight Schultz back one more time...

I'd shoot my grandmother for that.

Just wondering...

Did you ever give me credit for giving you the idea for Mars Or Bust?
