Pursuing equality through time and space
Mar. 23rd, 2010 10:16 amOne of the realities of the world is that some people have more stuff than others; division of property in absolute terms is unequal. As a result of this, we have campaigns for equality whose ideology is that division of property should be leveled out to a greater or lesser degree - in some cases by legitimising the confiscating of property to facilitate this division.
Under normal circumstances I don't engage with this mindset, but last night something struck me. What about people in the future?
People in the future have loads of stuff I don't have. They've got jetpacks and flying cars and ray guns and hotels on the moon and I don't. This is plainly unfair! They should be forced to share. I've got rights, you know. What gives them the right to live on Mars when I can't?
Anyway, I've decided I'll show them. I'm off out to buy a five-litre car.
