Jul. 25th, 2013 11:34 amWhat with the birth of yet another heir to the throne, there's been a lot of potted history popping up in the press to summarise Britain's rich and interested royal heritage. Some of it has been quite interesting, such as discovering that the Wars of the Roses were largely the fault of Edward III having loads of kids who then did the unexpected and didn't die like flies as was usual at the time leaving a whole stack of claimants for the throne behind him.
However, what really stands out is how royal history is full of people doing each other in. Bumping off rival claimants or folk who were just a bit inconvenient, and it struck me that there's a game to be made from this. It's an opportunity to be both historical and educational. but which game should it be based on?
Monopoly, for example, has a whole shedload of variants. You can get Monopoly editions for pretty much every conurbation you can name, right down to Wigan, and believe me when I say that if I were Rich Uncle Pennybags becoming a property tycoon in the WN postcode area wouldn't be top of my to-do list. However, one classic boardgame which doesn't have too many variants is Cluedo. You can get Harry Potter Cluedo and Sherlock Cluedo, but compared to the tidal wave of Monopoly editions there's little enough choice. So it struck me, given the amount of murder in the Royal Family's history, they should launch their own edition. I reckon it'd sell. You could have:
Murderer In With the
Roger Mortimer Berkeley Castle Red Hot Poker
James II Sterling Castle Window
Richard III The White Tower Pillow
Edward IV The White Tower Butt of Malmsey wine
Henry VIII Tower Green Sword
Queen Victoria The Island of St Helena Wallpaper
Duke of Edinburgh The Parisien Underpass White Fiat Punto
Any other suggestions?
