About ten years ago, I used to do competitive full-contact karate. I wasn't great, but I was okay; until the ady I tried to kick someone in the head and they tried to block me, and ended up punching me directly on the end of my big toe, which - for want of a better word - concertinaed .
By the time it healed, my right big toe was about 1/2 inch shorter then the left one, and my karate instructor had moved away, meaning that my scrapping says were over, more or less.

So what has that got to do with anything?

Well, after hurting myself last week, I had an appointment with the physio to have a look at me and see what was causing my problems. It turns out that pretty much everything stems from that one injury; my right big toe isn't providing me with the support it should (due to being too short)resulting in slight pronation to my foot. this has lead to overdevelopment of muscles on one side of my leg, pulling my knee slightly out of line (hence the occasional knee pain I get), and indirectly predisposing me to shin splints.

Fascinating stuff - it's one of those 'time machine' moments, where you think "Ah! If only I could warn myself not to boot Mark in the head!"
Still, now I know what is wrong, at least I can rty and do something about it.

Oooh :( Not nice. There's a huge variety of traners though - the ones I've got have brilliant support for the arches of my feet, and I've had foot cramp much less often in them than with my previous pair.

Do you know a good physio?

I seriously need a second opinion on my foot.

The one at my gym seemed pretty competant. She picked up all kinds of things about my posture et al that I'd never noticed.

As if by magic this weekend just gone I have smashed my big toe to pieces at martial arts.
I remembered you posting this so I thought i'd come back and have a look.
I don't think mine is that bad, just bruised, swollen and hurting!

:(
