A few weeks ago, I posted up the story of Sgt. Peter King and Pvt. Leslie Cuthbertson, and in the comments I bemoaned the fact that nobody has 'classic' names like Leslie Cuthbertson these days.

Well, as it turns out, I was wrong.

Terry-Thomas took that name after having watched "Harry Pepper's Gay White Coons" on Southend Pier, according to http://www.terrythomas.info/25963.html

You wouldn't find that happening these days. It's political correctness gone mad, I tell you...

Names are dangerous things. The celts (and pre celtic tribes) kept their birth name secret because they felt if someone knew your real name they had power over you. In many mythologies a demon or similar can be controled if you know it's name.
I grew up in central Wolverhampton in the fifties and sixties. The name Fiona was treated with the same reaction as the sight of my being sent to school with a gardenia in my hair.During the annual laugh fest known as checking your full registration you can imagine the reaction to my middle name-Felicity.It's tough growing up the daughter of a mixed marriage - mom was the daughter of an RSM, dad was a bricklayer.
