Finding myself in the office on Saturday, I decided to hit the gym before heading home. There I did all the usual sorts of things - iron my pumps (or whatever), punched bags, rowed, ran and so on for an hour or two - before deciding to have a swim before going home.
The pool was completely empty. This is so unusual that I was delighted and so I got to splash and frolic undisturbed. It was like being a film star and having my own private pool.
I'm not actually a very good swimmer, I just enjoy it, and as I bobbed up and down the pool in a manner reminiscent of an epileptic sheep I slowly became aware that there was someone on the poolside watching me. I assumed that it was someone slowly shaking their head at my swimming technique and thinking that at least it was nice to see someone training so hard for the Special Olympics. As I reached the end of the pool, he wandered over to talk to me.
"'scuse me?" he said. "You do know we close early today for the Bank Holiday?"
"Oh, okay", I said. "What time?"
"Half past four."
I looked at the clock. It was twenty past five. That explained why I'd had the pool the myself.
