1. Anything which looks too good to be true almost certainly is.
But people still send money to Nigerian scammers. Sigh.

2. Despite appearances, Wasabi is not a dip like Guacamole and should not be treated as such.
Aren't you glad you have me to tell you these things?

3. Always be personally responsible for your own income.
If you rely exclusively upon mummy & daddy/partner/the social or similar source of income which you have no influence over, sooner or later you're going to get burned. Take control of your own finances.

4. Any person who thinks that you will be interested in hearing about how mummy and/or daddy didn't love them enough the first time you meet them has an above-average chance of being nuts. Do not get involved.
If a friend tells you personal things then that's what friends are for. If a stranger tells you personal things then they're probably attention seeking, and not in an good way.

5. If there is a pattern in your life which you don't like then the mostly likely cause of it is you. Change yourself before you try to change others.
Aristotle once said that we are what we repeatedly do. Smart feller, Aristotle.

6. Anyone who tells you they have magic/psychic/divine/other powers is either lying or deluded.
They are, you know. And if you think you do, then you're deluded too.

7. If you split up with your other half, quit your job and stop paying your rent, don't expect any sympathy when you complain of being single, skint and homeless.
I'm often amazed by how often people do stuff like this.

8. Treating people like they're stupid is the best way of getting them to act as if they are.

9. Whatever you want to do, don't procrastinate.
What do you want to do? Whatever it is, go and do it right now. Why are you reading your friends list? Stop it.

Having breasts is not the same as having magic powers. Just very similar.

I remember one person saying they would eat anything they could kill themselves, barehanded. So they ate chicken, but not cow.

3. Always be personally responsible for your own income.

Is easier said than done. Sometimes one makes sacrifices of onesself for others. It's a good goal to aim for, but it's not always attainable. Sometimes getting burned is worth it, if it means that someone you love doesn't.

What do you want to do?

Read my f-list

Whatever it is, go and do it right now.

I will, once I've finished typing this comment.

Why are you reading your friends list?

I'm not, I'm typing a comment to it

Stop it.

I refuse :P Oh, all right then.

And it would be mine to Shrublette, but with the proviso that if you become unintentionally pregnant it is not the child's fault, and the child should NOT suffer because of your mistake.

I stay with Ian and rely on his income for her, and yes, it burns, but she's worth it.

It's good advice but I agree with Jennie in that it is not always possible. When I had Anwen for over a year I was financially dependent on Gav as I was a full time mother. I could have lived off the state instead I suppose but it still wouldn't have been being responsible for my own income really.

From: [identity profile] raggedhalo.livejournal.com
The other issue with being personally responsible for your own income is that you don't necessarily have great influence over an employer -- e.g. redundancy, restructure, etc.

I agree with you in principle (actually, I agree with you in principle on pretty much all of these) but it's the detail where it falls apart. All of society, despite what Maggie tried to tell us, is interdependent and while we're all responsible for our own choices, it's hard to take responsibility for other people's choices. Unless you were hitting them with a stick immediately prior to them making their choice.

I do state that 'if you rely exclusively...' . What this means that if you don't attempt to take control for yourself but instead rely upon without making any effort, blah blah blah.

That makes sense.

Aside from the wasabi one, most of your guidelines can be summarised as "take responsibility for your life and actions" and "don't be an arse." *grin*

2. Despite appearances, Wasabi is not a dip like Guacamole and should not be treated as such.

My Great-Aunt just told a story last night about her first trip to a sushi bar.

She saw guacamole, took a little bit (pea-sized) on a piece of sushi, and felt a shock of pain go straight to the crown of her head. Apparently her skin is very sensitive to acids, as she ended up with a line of blisters across her lip and the inside of her cheek, too.
