The gym I go to is quite a popular one and is used by several celebrities - including Daley Thompson and John McVicar, both of whom are insanely fit for their age and provide a glowing example of what can be done with a lot of free time and an obsession bordering on psychosis.
With people like them as exemplars, every so often I start thinking that all this time I spend in the gym might be paying off. I only think this briefly before my hubris is once again punctured.

Out on the running track last night I was puffing and wheezing along when I was first overtaken and then actually lapped by a man with one leg.

I have to wonder why I bother.
