On to cheerier matters.
I went to see the stage production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang last night, mainly because it has both Richard O’Brien AND Brian Blessed in it.
O’Brien, for a man pushing sixty, retains an ethereal – almost inhuman - grace and nimbleness and does a fantastically creepy job as the child catcher (picking out kids in the audience, saying “I know where you live…” “And I don’t like YOU either…”). However, he leaves the performance on the 14th so you’d have to hurry to catch him.
Brian Blessed is his usual dangerously enthusiastic self, putting in a suitably OTT performance as Baron Bomburst of Vulgaria. I’d recommend it to anyone who, like me, has never really bothered with this growing up malarkey – go along and cheer the Baron, why don’t you? The Vulgarians have fantastic uniforms and a fine attitude towards birth control.
Oh, and it’s got the some fab musial numbers, great jokes (that the kids won't get...), and the best flying car effect you’ll see on stage anywhere, I guarantee it. You’ll believe a car can fly.
And with that, I’m off to Greece for a week of lounging on the beach, drinking heavily, and eyeing up the topless German girls when the wench isn’t looking. Have fun without me, all.
