Star Wars:

I’ve seen every Star Wars film from the front row circle, Odeon Leicester Square: the best seats in the house for with the biggest screen in Europe. I am a sad little geekmonkey indeed. Then the wench & I went & saw it again on Sunday, and it bears watching again – it’s a good film. A very good film – very James Bond in structure: “follow the trail of clues the bad guy’s hideout and then a big fight between Ninjas and goons in a volcano/arena.” In other words, it’s pretty much “You Only Live Twice”, and no worse for it.
I think that Lucas missed a trick by not digitally inserting a young Peter Cushing into the balcony scene where Palpatine is watching the Star Destroyers launch.
When I got home, Hilary was full of her idea that for the DVD release they need to put in out-takes, such as:

Obi-Wan ordering drinks at the bar. The Camera pans round to Anakin next to him saying “You don’t need to see my identification. I am old enough to buy alcohol…”

Christopher Lee trying to shoot lightning from his hands, and it just fizzling…”I’m sorry George, I just don’t seem to have it today…”

Senator Palpatine watching the Star Destroyers launch and turning to Lucas, off camera…”What’s my motivation in this scene, George?” “Conquer the Universe.” “Ah, yes, thanks.”

Obi-Wan leaping for the window to grab the drone outside, and bouncing off it with a dull thud. Someone off camera shouts “Wrong window!”

Padme falling into the lake as Anakin helps her out of the little boat. Multiple takes of this shot, and the camera crew laughing offscreen…

Repeated takes of Obi-Wan at the bar…the number of glasses in front of him increases with every shot, and his delivery gets increasingly slurred…

I could go on, but we were giggling over this for ages last night.

Rammstein:
Cor! Star Wars and then this, blimey, good weekend. A cornucopia of Reifenstahl-inspired set design and pyrotechnics. Many of the things they do look very dangerous (such as the face-mounted flamethrowers from “Feuer Frei”), but you can tell they’re being very sensible and safe about it all, even though it looks stupid and apt to kill someone soon. The audience had a massive age diversity – from about 8 to sixty, and the number of little kids (8-9) with their parents was surprising, and I’d expect more than one pair dragged their whining junior-rebel out after the simulated sodomy during “Buch Dich”. Shame about the fucking teenagers trying to be tough and cool and stuff. I was forced to hit a couple of them who just didn’t get the idea that shoving me isn’t a good idea (not hard, just friendly warning-like). It’s odd how some are really okay, and other just think they have to try all the time…
