I've been discussing politics a lot recently with some of my left-wing chums. Unsurprisingly, most of them are either students or unemployed (I've always felt you can best judge the strength of someones conviction in left-wing doctrines by whether or not they still hold on to those ideas when they hit the 40% tax bracket), which has lead to some interesting differences in opinion, to say the least.
Now, I was planning to write a piece about left-wing politics and why I'm not a fan, but unfortunately I simply haven't had time - real life does tend to intrude.

And so I dug out this; it's from an RPG I wrote entitled "Vietnam Bloodbath: Where Charlie gets his". Naturally, being as it is a fun-filed family game set in the laugh-a-minute world of South-east Asian counter-insurgency warfare, no reputable gaming company will even look at it, but I'll publishing it one of these days when I have a few thousand lying round that I happen not to want.

Anyway; one of the major themes in the game is insanity, and it's benefits to being involved in soldiering - and one of the insanities it is possible to gain is "Believe Communist Propaganda", which does just what it says on the tin. I think it sums up, fairly succinctly, my opinion of left wing political and economic structures.

Believe Communist Propaganda.
If this insanity is taken, then the character falls under the spell of the writings of Marx, Lenin, and Chairman Mao and that most awful of fates befalls him: becoming a Commie! Every level of this insanity results in the character gaining 2 points in their strength and toughness stats (to a maximum of 100, due to all the hard work on the collective farm), but losing 5 points from the intelligence and perception stats (to a minimum of -10, caused by them becoming increasingly blinkered to the real world around them). Thus being taken in by the propaganda results in the character eventually becoming a hard working, drooling, imbecilic dupe of the international Communist Conspiracy!
As the character rises in levels in this insanity, they will also begin to develop various hideous and unnatural sexual perversions (one per level), chosen from this list: Homosexuality, Liking to go on top (female characters only), Sado- Masochism, Habitual Masturbation, Voyeurism, Bestiality. This is because it is common knowledge that all Commies are perverts who want to pollute our kids with their sick ideas.
The only cure for Communism and similar left wing views is for the character to gain a large amount of money. No-one may have a 'Believe Communist Propaganda' insanity score higher then their net worth in thousands of U.S. dollars.
Example: Gregor is a slobbering imbecile and believes firmly in the Communist doctrines (level 6) until one day his rich American uncle dies and leaves him 6000 dollars. Gregor suddenly becomes a lot smarter and his beliefs in the rights of the worker and the equal distribution of wealth disappear overnight. Gregor sets about spending the money and soon he has none left after several nights of champagne, gambling, cigars and prostitutes. His communist beliefs promptly return as strongly as ever.
The Communist will also become addicted to listening to that Goddam subversive 'rock & roll' music.

Ah, I work a full time, consultant, sell my soul to the devil, payed up middle class job...but still hold to my pinko leftie commie scum, tree hugger hippie views. However, I was always faily pragmatic about my views (in common with our friend Stalin, and the mighty Castro himself) so possibly do not count as a total commie scum card holder.

So who are you really? Anyone I know?

You know me.

Mind you, I work for the NHS.

And, from an early age, my parents sent me to Socialist Sunday School. That kind of conditioning is hard to break.

And I forgive you your juvenile brainwashing ;)

The anonymous one wasn't me.

I don't post anonymously.

I was just 'me-tooing'

I'm a friend of a friend of Jenny's. I have no LJ, but check my friend's and then his friends' and you're on the list, so I read your posts. I have not often agreed with you, but keep reading, as I like a bit of debate! I posted about Bush as well.

Righto, just curious about the people I don't know.

And don't worry about not agreeing with me, I find that it usually takes people time before they realise the inherent wisdom of my words.

Huh? What?

Thinking now...
You know [livejournal.com profile] kowt. This implies you're from that crowd. I can only think of 2 girls from there without LJs. How am I doing?

nope. I'm not strictly from that crowd! but good try, I haven't met you, or in-fact, many people from the LJs. I do know Firekitten though. I come from an earlier portion of Kowt's life than most of the Notts crowd.

[cough]

I'm in the 40% tax bracket and still hold true to what are basically socialist ideals (I'm not a communist in most senses) - redistribution of wealth, some nationalised industries, free healthcare and education.

And (very tight months aside) I try to hold true to those beliefs in my personal life, helping friends out where possible. I have odd beliefs about charities and support only three regularly - Centrepoint, the NSPCC and Amnesty.

But I agree - it is the measure of someone if they can go from saying "There should be more for people like me" to saying "There should be more for people like them."

I'm not sure which tax bracket I'm in, but I earn a reasonable salary, and still hold leftwing views. Don't confuse communism with socialism - that's like saying that being right wing is equivalent to fascism. Most ideologies taken to an extreme will produce undesirable/unpleasant results. In many ways I still wish I lived on the co-op, I didn't leave because I lost my idealism, or gave up my left wing beliefs, but for personal reasons (personality clash). I have looked for other co-ops in Wales, but none of them are even vaguely near Cardiff, sadly.

While your frothing right wing antics make me groan you may find a market for your game now.
There are several Afghanistan flag waving games out in the latest rush of right wing american propagandising.
Just ask Keyvan, he can probably put you in touch with people who might be interested in playing it.
Failing that the white supremacists linked from Eddy's journal seem to be on a similar wavelength, only over race, not ideology.
I'm sure they have no love for commies though.

You may also want to look into the various 'Freedom' sovereignty projects like Oceana (sp). That's a libertarian project and I don't agree with everything they're doing, but similar ideas have gone around for other ideologies.
The problems lie when people are forced to live in societies they don't agree with (or under the sway of those societies).
The only way to make everyone happy is to give everyone a place where they can live according to their ideals.
I think it's sad that the high earners seem to think they suddenly have less responsibility to their fellow man.

It's actually a strongly anti-war game, whose politics are probably on a close par with Private Eye, so I doubt they'd take it.

But I wouldn't expect you to actually check up on something before judging.

Erm, I was actually being serious.
We were joking just last month about these people possibly bringing out a Vietnam game.
Thought you might be interested in slipping something past people.
Nevermind...

A conversation I wasn't involved in, and know nothing about...

Erm, I was actually being serious.

That's the thing - it's impossible to tell mood or tone in a written medium! (I seem to have said this to you elsewhere *g* ) As you've 'primed' me by slagging off my politics in other posts, it's natural to assume this has continued in this one.
Please, seroiusly, differentiate in mood in some way? That way we can avoid avoidable misunderstandings?
Please?

Left, Right ... each is equally stupid as the other ...

My view, whatever one's political inclinations, one should have the good sense to do good by one's neighbours and not share the arrogance of pushing one's own values onto them. If one thinks one's values are so wonderful, live by them and lead by example.
