...is that the TV images of bronzed athletes in there make you feel guilty about leaving again and so you end up staying three quarters of an hour longer than you'd planned.

Sounds like the time I decided to stay on the treadmill & watch a programme about the Bismarck on the discovery channel. It was 3 hours long.
