A list of trite aphorisms on love, stolen from [livejournal.com profile] winterthing and commented upon by me.

I love you not because of who you are, but because of who I am when I am
with you.

Now that could have been said very easily by Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs.

Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to, doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.

But it does still mean that they don’t have what I want. Next!

A true friend is someone who reaches for your hand and touches your heart.

Frankly, I expect a little more than just that from my friends.

The worst way to miss someone is to be sitting right beside them knowing you can't have them.

I wouldn’t know, never having had that experience.

Never frown, even when you are sad, because you never know who is falling in love with your smile.

But that precludes all the people who would fall in love with my frown; and lets face it, they’re likely to be far more interesting people.
Why is it I can tell that these were written by Americans?

To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.

And that one person is me.

Don't waste your time on a man/woman, who isn't willing to waste their
time on you.

The world is full of losers who have this misguided idea that they are more important than me. It’s a lifelong mission to educate them otherwise

Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people before meeting the right
one, so that when we finally meet the person, we will know how to be
grateful.

Maybe God just plain hates you. Or perhaps you just attract losers.

Don't cry because it is over, smile because it happened.

What about crying because it ever began in the first place?

There's always going to be people that hurt you so what you have to do
is keep on trusting and just be more careful about who you trust next time
around.

There’s a great way to get screwed repeatedly. Alternatively, just stay paranoid and wait for people to prove themselves.
‘Keep on trusting’ my eye.

Make yourself a better person and know who you are before you try and know someone else and expect them to know you.

Well, that’s pretty much gibberish. Define ‘better’, and then we’ll talk.

Don't try so hard, the best things come when you least expect them to.

But then again other things come when you least expect them, like a runaway combined harvester when you’re standing at the foot of a hill.
And, lets face it, you’re more likely to get good things if you work at them.

On an entirely unrelated note...

I might just owe you a fiver.

Apparently Iraq has agreed to unfettered UN inspector access in accordance with original UN resolutions.

We'll need to see whether the UN will agree and then whether the US will acquiesce or attack anyway in the next months.

I feel incredibly cynical to agree - but... well, if you're going to be that cutesy about it.

Besides, I don't really want a friend holding my heart. I think it might be uncomfortable. And death-inducing. :P

Unless your friend was a very experienced cardiothoracic surgeon and knew what he/she was doing.

..True. The closest I've got, though, is someone who uses a scalpel to cut the flash off warhammer models, and another one who pouted when I flayed the pig's skull without her. ;)

I also have a skin- rash like reaction to these type of love generalizations. You can tell an american wrote them because they have the same starry- eyed dewey- faced attitude that all of us Yanks seem to carry no matter how hard we try to shake it, and "islanders" seem to be able to spot it a mile off.
This comment comes from sad expeiriance, having fallen hook, line, and sinker for blarney given to me by not one but 3 men from various lands under the Queen's control. Yeah, we're naive. And we don't care. That's what the English are for, to snap us out of it, eh? Nia

It's the accent. It gets you American ladies every time.

Why do you think I go the US at least once a year? :)

Gah. I have an otherwise likable friend who sends this sort of list to me about once a month. I should try giving them a treatment similar to yours and sending them back.

Why is it I can tell that these were written by Americans?

Yes, sadly. This is yet another reason for me to become an ex patriot. Well, that and the current US president.

Punt them over to me, I'll happily give them the treatment.

And is that expatriate or ex-patriot? ;)

That depends entirely on how much I've been following the US news at the time. :-)
