Everyone knows that PETA (People for the ethical treatment of animals) are completely crackers. Yes, they have a name which is well-crafted to evoke sympathy (how could anyone not want to do things 'ethically'? It's only after you examine how they define 'ethical' that the complete bonkersness sinks in), but ever since their Holocaust on your plate campaign which equated battery farming with Treblinka, nobody has taken them seriously.

Which brings me to their latest outburst of spectacular insanity: Sea Kittens. Rebranding fish as sea kittens to stop people fishing and eating the tasty, tasty finny little blighters. Some say that it's a joke campaign with a seroius point (for example, [livejournal.com profile] raggedhalo seems to be a fan, and that's usually a sign that there's something badly wrong). I say that it makes a joke out of a point in the same earnest way that a trendy vicar tries to reach out to the kids, and the only way to react to them is the same way that 'the kids' react to trendy vicars. Contempt and mockery. With that in mind: LOLseakittens. Add your own.

No, I found out about it last week. Some of us have jobs where we have to do work, though.

This advertising campaign has convinced me that I have no soul.

I made happy little 'squeee' noises when I found out about the campaign, and spent ages playing on their website where you can design your own sea kitten, with add on whiskers and lipstick and all sorts. I thought it was fantastic.

It also reminded me how much I like smoked salmon so I went out to buy some for dinner that evening.

I'm sure that wasn't their intent. I think I was probably warped as a small child when my grandfather let me help him feed the fluffy baby lambs on the farm and then later served them for dinner.

That's because, as a campaign, it is rubbish. It's overly earnest and won't engage the target audience except to alienate them.

I approve of the concepts but disapprove of their methods. I think this is because I disapprove of fanatics and extremists whatever they go on about (religion, sea kittens, football...)
