Still a fine time to start buying.

Maybe, but the herd mentality of fear still makes it nerve wracking.
I was looking speculatively at Royal Bank of Scotland yesterday; their liabilities are 1.8trn and their assets are 1.9trn against a 6bn market cap - indicating they're undervalued on fundamentals.

Not even I'm that brave, foolish or reckless, though :)

Good luck!

Off topic- have you seen/made plans to see The Wrestler yet? I keep hearing about its general awesomeness but have been rubbish at sorting it out.

The lass wants to see "something" tonight in Islington so I'm toying between The Wrestler, so I see it or Slumdog Millionaire with view to gloming onto/making Wrestler viewing plans with yourself for later on.

What are your thoughts?

JmC
Its possible I could convince her into central London tonight but not likely...

I've been trying to find the time to see it, but I'm only going to be in town for about 2-3 days out of the next 2 weeks. I'm free early feb if you're prepared to wait that long to see it?

Rubbish! Curse your full and exciting life.

I shall gauge opinion of Gunel and let you know outcomes. If not them there are plenty of fine films coming up!

JmC
Unless you become so rich playing the market that you wouldn't be seen with the likes of me!

I've made 1% on the day, you know.

My life isn't full & exciting, alas. I'm going to see clients.

Well done!

In bad news I was unable to convince Gunel into the joys of either Role Models ("This is a silly film, yes?") or Slumdog Millionaire- she knows nothing about WWTBAM, the fact he's that kid from Skins or Danny Boyle ("The guy who did Trainspotting? You loved that! No?"). So the Wrestler tonight at 8.00, Islington Vue it is.

Next time, chum!

JmC
Do YOU want to see Slumdog?

Slumdog Millionaire is on my list - it looks very good.

Well, that's all the pound is going to be good for by the end of the year, so fixed assets seem to be the way to go.

I've been looking at HSBC and Barclays in a speculative manner for a few months now, but held off thus far - but RBS? You're more tolerant of risk than I am!

Or nationalised so the shares will be worthless.

Indeed, if I thought Labour were competent enough, I'd suspect that this whole 'banking bailout' fiasco had been a cunning plan to undermine confidence in the banks, sow fears of nationalisation leading to the collapse of their share prices, and making it easier for Broon to fulfil his socialist command management wet dream of taking them into state control.

You're missing possibility 3, which is full nationalisation and you getting 1p in the £. RBS is currently undervalued on fundamentals, but not by much and it would only take a few more dodgy mortgages to push them into effective insolvency. Those odds don't appeal to me!

Could you tell me how often you get this right?

Because I have got lots to stick in the market.

Still, I think it has got a bit further to fall...

How often? Um... my track record is patchy to say the least so I'm no guru. My thinking here is that the pound is likely to fall more over the rest of the year so finding places to put my money that have fixed assets that'll hold value against a falling currency is a better move than my current account.

Too bad peace isn't a securitized commodity. That's the sort of high risk gamble worth selling short. ;-)

You want to invest in the future?

Plastic cement, especially the mass production stuff, and the low-mercury production tech. Even in recession, worldwide demand is still high for it, and reformulated concrete is how most are trying to stretch it.

The risk, of course, is in the carbon dioxide footprint of cement production, and whole facilities suddenly being uneconomical to operate.

Warren Buffet says "don't invest in something you don't understand". I don't know this market at all, so I'm not going there.

Fair enough. Solar is starting to soften, and that might be another reasonable area with prudent selection. In the meantime, there should be safety in beer.
