Nietzsche's most famous observation was 'that which does not kill me makes me stronger', which plainly isn't true. I can think of loads of non-fatal things which won't do that.

Ten things which probably won't kill you but are highly unlikely to make you stronger:

1) Halitosis
2) Accidentally sitting on a cactus
3) Deliberately sittting on a cactus
4) Happy Meals as part of a calorie-controlled diet
5) Forgetting to wash your hands between putting Deep Heat on and going to the toilet.
6) Voting Labour
7) Haemarrhoids
8) Gout
9) Livejournal
10) Eating three large bowls of All-Bran in one sitting

4. A hamburger happy meal with Diet Coke is 480 calories, and as such, a quite reasonable treat/fried fix when dieting.

Everyone is a pillock sometimes.

I have Nietzshe on a rapidly shrinking pile of books to read. I'm rather looking forward to it.

Just because its false in alot of cases doesn't mean its false in all of them. Used as a media sound byte, and with no context its plainly bollox. As a framework to overcome adversity its quite powerful.

Loosing your legs for example, would be a terrible thing. And it doesn't make you stronger in lots of ways. But if you as a person lost your legs, and lived to cope with it, i can see that you though being physically weaker as a result of the injury, may actually be stronger in terms of what hardship and difficulty you can overcome.

I do know what he means. But that doesn't make him any less of a pillock :)

i think the bigger pillocks are the people that read too much into it, and then go on about it alot :p

Everyone's a pillock.

I think it's the Red Dwarf Diary which contains something spookily similar to this:

"That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Unless it bites your legs off, in which case it just makes you shorter."

It does amuse me that people think Nietzsche has so many important insights into contemporary western culture. He's never been there.

... don't buy "Transition". I found a copy in a charity shop over the weekend. It appears virtually unread

There's a substantial body of evidence emerging in Helmand to suggest that voting Labour does in fact get you killed.
