But enough about my lovemaking technique - what about the snow?

When the weather forecast promises me that over a foot of gleaming white snow will fall on my house overnight, there are few things more disappointing than waking up to find a meagre sprinkling of the stuff and having to come in to work after all.
Bah.

I've learned over the decades that promised deep snow *never* arrives. It's only ever a happy surprise.

Isn't that how Good King Wenceslas likes his pizzas?

No snow here, but enough frost that it looks like it still under a fog grey sky.

Weather reporting and the "Media".

Listen to local radio around these parts and they would have you beleive that its death to venture out your door. I listened to weather reports on December 23rd talking of travel chaos and doom and gloom. I then proceded to drive over 300 miles across the country and back again, on perfectly serviable roads and the like. The media puts a twist on things. And the twist they put on the weather is blatently huge and easily seen to so often be wrong. It makes me doubt the accuracy of their reporting in all other areas. For example wartorn streets of city X. I guess you could go around any town and get shots of ran down damaged walls and buildings right?

Anyway - the media can't be trusted. What can?

I was wondering the other day how come we're having the coldest winter since 1963 in the face of climate change. Apparently the answer is that when it's colder it's 'weather', and when it's warmer it's 'climate'.

So that makes sense then.

It should be noted that we are at the same latitude as Labrador in Canada. The reason we don't get their climate is because of the Gulf Stream. However if melting ice-caps force the Gulf Stream south (as has happenned several times before (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heinrich_event)) then it'll get very much colder here, even if global mean temperature is rising.

I'm aware of that theory - however, as the temperature in Spain doesn't appear to have changed much lately I think we can safely assume that it hasn't happened yet.

That's because spain doesn't have a massive lump of air blowing straight in from Siberia. Most of our weather comes from the North Atlantic, but not the snow.

And just because the UK is getting a cold snap doesn't mean that mean global temperatures aren't rising- Nor that Canada and other places aren't unseasonally warm.

Well, a quick glance at the canadian weather service attributes their mild winter to the long-established cyclic phenomenon of El Nino, so I'm not sure that really proves anything either way.

However, checking the BBC archives, I note that the very mild winter of 2004 was attributed to climate change, whilst according to News at Ten last night the current cold weather can be attributed to climate change. You'll understand my confusion on the matter, I'm sure.
I'm just wondering what weather conditions won't be attributed to climate change. I'm guessing rains of frogs, or possibly hot hail, but I'm prepared to be disabused on that.

Well, there was a fair amount when I went to bed last night, but it'd mostly melted again this morning. Sadly. Still, heavy snow predicted from mid-afternoon again, so fingers crossed! :-)

If the trains are all snowed up tomorrow I shall be going to Battersea Park to build a snowman. You are welcome to come along.

I would most definitely be up for that, though unfortunately I work walking distance from home so I doubt I'll have the day off... But if you're still there late afternoon/early evening then I'll join you!

I feel exactly the same. The snow was gorgeous and deep and promising all kinds of havoc at midnight last night. Then it changed to sleet at 6 am and most of it got washed away. I was full of vexation.

In Weymouth there is no visible snow settling but since most of the staff at our school live 'over the hill' (some nearly as far as Yeovil!) the school has now officially closed.

And so, naturally, I immediately rush home to check what David has written :D

Bah, the media is always over exaggerating. We're forecasted to get around 2-4 inches here in Ohio, but we'll either get nothing or the 6-10 that was promised to Indianapolis.

Either way I am not looking forward to my commute tomorrow.

I approve of your lovemaking technique, in theory lol

A meagre foot of snow somehow gets people out of going to work? This settles it, I'm moving to the UK.

Stranger than you know...
