It's Bonfire night next week, and the Wade family, along with Monty,
godzuki and
puddingcat shall be gathering for our annual festival of drunken messing with explosives. In recent years, thanks to the end of the stock market era, our excesses have been somewhat tempered - in '99 our firework budget was over £1,000 (huzzah for the dotcom boom!), but this year we're only going to flare off about £400 (boo to the dotcom crash!).
Every year we burn someone in effigy. This started as a ritual when my sister began to make increasingly elaborate effigies of Guy Fawkes; then we moved on to Tony Blair, and this year we're burning Robert Mugabe. My sister - who is famously talented and clever but refuses to acknowldge this - usually spends weeks building a full effigy complete with articulated plaster skeleton. Couple this with a bunch of fireworks several feet in diameter and far too much beer and you have an annual get-together wherein the only surprise is that nobody has been seriously injured yet. And then a couple of hours of Baron Munchausen by the fire...the finest entertainment known to man. Joy.
I was reading the latest Viz last night, and Spoilt Bastard reminded me so much of myself: "Quick! Put the fireworks out! Those council children are watching!"
