It struck me this morning that Hallowe'en is on the way, and that means it's the time of year when I get my pen out and try to write some tales o' terror.

IN previous years this has included such pants-wetting fables as

David and Monty at the Mountains of Madness,

Murder in moominland,

The lost valley of the dinosaurs,

The six-word tales of terror,

The wining, and

I was a teenage Libdem werewolf.

So, I'm opening the floor to suggestions for tales of lurking fear and suchlike. I sort-of promise to write the best.

I have already written The portrait of Alistair Montgomery, but I'll consider the twilight one?

Mooinpappa sells his soul is pretty much the plot of Moominpappa at sea, I tell you.

Someone has already written a 'crossover fic' for HP Lovecraft and the Care Bears. It is entitled 'At the Montains of Cuteness' and unimaginable horrors shall befall whomsoever Googles for it.

Try something with an historical twist, a nineteenth-century election brought face-to-face with the creeping horrors of modern political journalism: put in a grim scene with Jon Snow and the swingometer, and call it 'The Pitt and the Pendulum'.

That's rather witty.

On the way to work this morning I came up with an idea for a Steampunk take in which a band of physics pirates go on a quest to find the Higgs Bo'sun, but alas I can't think of anything to do with it.

Treasures From the Electron Vault

The trouble with the Higgs vector boson is that it's not inherently witty: once you've used 'mass' in a pun (usually, in an ecclesiastical context; but 'mass hysteria' is perfectly serviceable) you're pretty much finished.

After that, it's physics in-jokes, and they don't get any better than 'I remember when all this was Fields': so you're left with writing an amusing story the hard way - write your own characters and give them a plot instead of a particular one-liner and some padding.

So jolly well done for finding one more gag than I did; but now you've packed everything in, including the kitchen sink; or, if you will, the hand bo'sun.

I don't know one of my favourites:

What do [livejournal.com profile] token_limey and a photon have in common?
They both interfere with themselves when nobody's looking.

or even:

As the train pulled in to the station this morning, an announcement came over the tannoy: "Please use all available doors to exit the train".
Fortunately I was in wave form at the time, so I did just that.
