A few years ago, you might recall the economy was driven into a tree and things got a bit hairy or a while. This resulted in me spending 2009 doing very little but working at the expense of the important things in life like not working, or touching myself like a monkey in the zoo, or drinking heavily with girls. I didn't take any time off at all and so by December I was feeling rather burned out and, as a treat because it didn't look like I was going to go bankrupt after all, I hired myself a castle for a week to get away from it all. It was this one:

It turned out not to be that great, as when castles were built it was like the middle ages or something and they didn't have central heating, and the current owners hadn't bothered putting any in, meaning that as it was December it was jolly cold. Moreover, the only heating in the building was provided by open wood fires and the owners were entertaining themselves with a humourous pleasantry at my expense by charging a fiver a sack for wood.
I got my revenge by sleeping in every bed in the place so they'd have to launder everything rather than just one set of sheets.

But it was a break and as I sat toasting my toes by the fire one evening and consuming a bottle of something fortifying I got to thinking:
"I've done nothing but work this year", I thought to myself. "What I need is a project. Something to do with my brane which isn't actual work, to give me other interests and stuffand t'ing. Something to stimulate the old neurons. At that moment my phone rang. It was [livejournal.com profile] angusabranson ringing to ask if I'd like to write this, which as happy coincidences go is about as happy as they get.

Anyway, ever since then I've tried to have a project a year for precisely that reason - to give me something to do with my brain that isn't the job. I've written a couple of books and a script (which [livejournal.com profile] flywingedmonkey and I might do something with one day if we get round to it), and I was thinking of doing something other than scrawling yet more words next year - I was thinking of having a crack at making music this time, and so I've been looking at making music software. I was wondering if you lot could recommend anything. I've looked at Sibelius, but really I've no clue what I'm doing here. Does anyone have any suggestions of where to start?

Yes, I've got the wind section and percussion sorted, but I was looking to add strings as well.

Add a man-thong to the equation. Listen to the music happening.

My musical friends recommend Sibelius. If you'd rather start with something simpler (i.e. free) then look at Noteworthy.

I was going to have a crack at just writing stuff on the computer, just to see what I can do.

I can play an instrument already, to an extent, but I've always been better at theory. I got grade 5 in that.
