A few years ago now, the government erected a statue of Nelson Mandela in Parliament Square. It wasn't one of those classically inspired statues with clean lines and a dramatic flourish, but more modernist with lots of lumps and knobbles on it which are supposed to suggest dynamism and action but in reality just make it look unfinished. He's there because of his fight for democratic recognition for the large proportion of the population of South Africa.
Subsequent to this, last week the government announced that it will be joined by a statue of Ghandi on the basis that the Indians have got loads of money and we'd like to suck up to them so they'll buy more of our stuff Gandhi is the father of the largest democracy in the world and he deserves this recognition.

Anyway, just as an observation today is Emmeline Pankhurst's birthday. Now, she brought democratic recognition to more than half the population of this country and her statue is round the corner in Victoria Gardens, stuck at the back. I'm just mildly surprised it's not facing the wall.

I don't think this should annoy me as much as it does, but it does.
