There's a saying that 'you can judge a man by the quality of his enemies'.
Looking about at the quality of the people whom I know don't like me much, I realise just how depressing that is.

Would one or two people who fit the following criteria please choose to be my enemy?

1) You must be able to spell and conjugate correctly at least 50% of the time.
2) Ideally, your IQ should be above room temperature.
3) You should be brave enough to sign your name when posting abusive email.
4) You should possess the ability to dispute with me and to argue in a thoughtful, coherent manner.

Sadly, none of the people of whose dislike I'm aware match any - never mind all - of these criteria, so I'm worried that my quality may be slipping. Thank you for your time.

Really? I might grant you 1-3, but I've seen little evidence of a tendency towards 4 no matter whom you are debating with.

All the time.

I've not seen 4 in you though, just a tendency to be arrogant and condescending rather than relying on actual logical dissembling of argument.

Oh, yes, I tend to get quite short with people who can't present a cogent argument but won't acknowledge the fact; I'm happy to deal with people who're prepared to say that they ain't very good at arguing but this is how they feel; hell, I'll argue from gut feeling myself from time to time, but I'll normally point out I'm arguing from opinion (however, I prefer not to), and whilst doing so I'd be aware that that weakens my position, perhaps fatally.
