The David Tolerance Test
Mar. 18th, 2004 10:26 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
It’s commonly observed that we live in a multicultural society, in which tolerance for others is a valuable commodity and is one which we must all strive towards. After all, it is very easy to say that one is tolerant, but it is sometimes interesting quite how quickly some people’s ‘tolerant’ attitudes fall to pieces when put to the test. In thinking about this, I’ve decided to write the David Tolerance Test.

SCORING THIS TEST
If you scored fewer than 20 points, you are worryingly intolerant; certainly you have difficulty integrating meaningfully in modern Western Liberal society. Instead of railing about the failings of society (which you undoubtedly do), you would be better served by thanking that selfsame society for putting up with even outcasts like yourself.
If you scored more than 65 points, you’re probably clapping yourself on the back, congratulating yourself on what a tolerant, understanding person you are. No matter what life throws at you, you accept with a twinkle, knowing that you’re tolerant of others and their foibles.
Well, I have news for you. You aren’t tolerant, you’re vacillating. Bending with every social breeze that passes, your indecisiveness is a social hindrance, and your inability to make judgment calls on matters of moral equivalence means that you cannot interact meaningfully with modern democratic society. Please – and I’m saying this for my good as well as yours – don’t use your vote until you’re capable of making up your mind.
If you scored between 20 and 65, although you have developed critical judgment and have a fair degree of acceptance of the variability of humanity, you probably aren’t as tolerant of others as you like to think you are. The whole point of this exercise is to make one point, which is my basic contention: There Is No Such Thing As A Tolerant Human Being.
I can’t remember who it was that said it, but it was once observed that the people most likely to turn on one like a pack of dogs and string you up from a lamppost for disagreeing with them are self-satisfied liberals who congratulate themselves upon their tolerance. So it has ever been since the dawn of human history: as Ook the Chimp looked up from his copy of The Daily Ug and said “You know, I have nothing against those chimps in the next tree, but I do wish they’d stay there and stop trying to come over here and take our Bananas”, so has humanity continued since.
What I want to have achieved here is to have made you look at your own prejudices and compare them with others and think about why you hold the opinions you do. Go back, read through the list. Ask yourself why you think the things you do. Are they just received wisdom? Could you defend your beliefs with reasoned argument? Why is one thing wrong in your eyes and another right? Why will you accept one person and reject another?
The best way to help make a better world is not for everyone to hold hands and sing a song, as my socialist chums would have you believe (because it’s human nature to hate and avoid), but to understand the prejudices of ourselves and others, When you understand someone, it becomes harder to hate them and easier to find ways to work around the intolerance that is our human heritage.
If you don’t agree with me, then you’re just plain intolerant.
And I hate people like that.

Date: 2004-03-18 03:33 pm (UTC)d) Islamic Fundamentalists
c) Fur (Antique)
a) Shooting - only for food
b) Angling - only for food
d) Steeplechase (E.G. The Grand National) - depends on saftey
f) Boxing - the alternative to legal boxing is worse, and if it is consenting adults then OK, barely
g) Bare-knuckle fighting - ditto
Absolutely not:
s) Vivisectionists - I am presuming you mean the people that actually do it? For people who believe it's OK that different. We'll argue once or twice but otherwise I can ignore it
i) Racial supremacists/isolationists (any colour) (E.g. KKK, Nation of Islam)
b) Fur (Farmed or Hunted)
c) Fox Hunting
e) Bullfighting
c) Spastic
d) Yid
e) Nigger
f) Pikey
(with the name calling, UNLESS it is a "name it and claim it" situation. I object to their usage as a vulgarism)
Only read Guardian dn Independent, though have flicked through articles in Sun and Mirror and Mail at break. Reminds me why I loathe them so much
Many of the others it depends on the situation. Pimp? Depends on what they're like. Dealer? Depends on what and who to.
Government is even more difficult. If the people of that country are genuinely happy to be under that form of rule, then fine.
Does anyone still wear a shellsuit?
And shooting what precisely? Fine throwing dwarfs if they are willing participants.

Sometimes I can't help but think I'd be much happier if I could look at life through blinkers rather than try to understand what's going on all the time :)

Date: 2004-03-21 01:31 pm (UTC)Why probably not to Islamic Fundamentalists? Well, I would find it difficult to know what we had in common, how a friendship could be formed. BUT there are many of them who are peaceful and do not necessarily want to hurt anyone else on the planet. In fact, TRUE Islamic fundamentalists believe in love and peace. Racial supremasists by their very nature are against other people. Further, there it gets personal, and I could not put aside one part of their beliefs (which i do with mayny other things - for example I have friends in the army although we never discuss their jobs), because no matter WHAT racial supremacist group they are, they are against me. See, I'm not entirely white so...

Date: 2004-03-19 06:04 am (UTC)Ok, part 1
Date: 2004-03-18 06:29 pm (UTC)David, well thought I would have a go. Before I start I would like to define what I consider tolerance to be. A tolerant person is someone who respects the opinions of other indiviuals as long as thoese individuals respects that persons views. This does not mean agrees with. OK here we go:
1) Which of the following do you have, or would you be willing to have, as friends? (Score one point for all that apply)
a) Heterosexuals Well I know you
b) Homesexuals/ bisexuals Hahahahahahha, self love counts!
c) Fetishists Know em, love em, don’t necessarily understand em
d) Islamic Fundamentalists Don’t know any, but this phrase is terribly misleading
e) Jehovahs Witnesses Can piss right off,
f) Convicted Theives Yep
g) Abortionists I have no problems with the medical profession.
h) Anti-abortionists Are Idiots. It’s the choice of the people who are invoved. Nobody else has any right to judge or comment.
i) Racial supremacists/isolationists (any colour) (E.g. KKK, Nation of Islam)
Scum. I refuse to accept the concept that someone is lesser than anyone else on terms of race, creed, political view, sexuality or nationality. Exceptin people who don’t stand their round (or in certain case Yorkshiremen). This may be one of the few things that I would get into a fight over. We have a great tradition of tolerance in this country and I am proud to associate myself with that.
j) Lancastrians The Toast! The Queen
k) Trainspotters Keep me employed
l) Conservative voters We live in a democracy. Deal with it
m) Prostitutes Each to their own
n) Pimps Are unnecesary. Legislate
o) Drug Dealers see above
p) Satanists each to their own
q) Southern Baptists As long as the word Bigot (caps on purpose) aren’t involved see above
r) Scientologists Nutters
s) Vivisectionists Hard one. I trust scientists (fool that I am) and know a number of individuals who have had this term applied to the, They are dedicated men and women who are doing work to improve the human condition in terms of diesease and knowledge . They do not cause suffering to animals for unnnecessary reasons nor do they take pleasure in experimeting on animals. Their work will, I hope, cure a number of diseases and conditions and bring a greater understanding to science. So I support them. And to threaten tem or their families with violence is wrong.
t) Intolerant People (Your definition) Anyone who is willing to intelligently state their point of view in a logical manner without refering to hearsay or religion I am happy to debate with. Otherwise sod off.
2) Which of the following governmental and economic forms do you consider acceptable in the modern world? (Score one point for all that apply)
a) Democracy You voted for it, you got it
b) Dictatorship (Communist) No
c) Dictatorship (Military) No
d) Dictatorship (Religious) No
e) Monarchy God Bless Her Majesty (in a multi demoninatial way, of course)
f) Free-market Capitalism Yes (it’s a myth, but lts let David have his dreams)
g) Socialism (International) Hahahahaha, Ok prove it
h) Socialism (National) see above. Theory Good, in practice doent work
Results...
2. 5 (Dictatorship in any form is unacceptable, in my view)
3. 8 ... shellsuits are just tasteless. ;-)
4. 4 ... undisciplined and smacking children are part and parcel of reality, regardless of how one feels about it - and the exceptions should be awarded with recognition and approval.
5. This largely depends on consent, I think. The rest should be left to moral suasion for the values of 'civilisation.'
6. 4
6b./7. 8, depends on context and consent, and the realities of life.
7b./8. "5" (18 actual)
---
48 I suppose.
:-)
Part 2
Date: 2004-03-18 06:30 pm (UTC)a) Fetish Wear Your choice
b) Fur (Farmed or Hunted) Unnecessary but Your choice
c) Fur (Antique) erg
d) Leather Your choice
e) Gentlemen not wearing a tie Entirely dependent on when
f) The Burkah Hard one. If it is someones personal choice. I did a google search on this and that didn’t help (this is a bit of a cop out answer, but we all apply different views on this)
g) The Hijab See above
BUT: On the last two points, it revolves around religion and culture. This is therefore a mindfield for the people who decide to think about things before making a comment. The first reaction is that this is all Bad, as you can see it as a form of control. I am interested to hear from others what their view is on this
h) The Yarmulkah This doesn’t have the same emotive or political conatations as the above. David, are you turning Rebuplican French on Us?
i) Shell Suits/Tracksuits Should be damned
4) Which of the following social behaviours do you consider acceptable in modern society (score one point for all that apply)
a) Littering No
b) Public Brawling No, unless betting is involved (JOKE)
c) Public Smoking (Tobacco) Yes
d) Public Smoking (Marijuana) er, I cant remember dude……
No, its illegal therefor unaceptale. Not because I feel it should be illegal, but rather because it puts people in the position of tacitly (a bit like passively smoking) accepting it. My view is legalise all Drugs and let the Customs and Excise sort em out.
e) Street Drinking and/or drunkenness Ouch. OK, Public drunkeness is not accepable when it impacts on others (carrying me home dosnt count). Pls see above before calling me a hipocrite.
f) Public Nudity If its David, Ban It. If its cute I am all for it
g) Public ‘Heavy petting’ See above (but in general NO)
h) Graffiti Make em clean it up
i) Undisciplined Children Are a pain, but its not ther fault.
j) Smacking Children Strongly Disagree. I come from a fairly disciplinary background, but my parents never smacked me. I do not belive that this is any way to enforce socially acceptable norms on children. But I am also single and have no kids. Balls, I am coming all on the fence liberal now.
Part 3(and end)
Date: 2004-03-18 06:31 pm (UTC)a) Shooting Yes, as long as you eat it (in my case I would starve as the safest game in the world is the one in front of my gun)
b) Angling Yes, eat what you catch.
c) Fox Hunting Yes and no: Ok here I go. Hunting a fox with hounds is a totally illogical thing to do. If you want to control foxes in the counrtyside SHOT THEM. But ridding to the hunt with hounds is a great experience and can be done without killing a fox (the occasional slightly enebriated Monty my die from a fall but it’s a risk I am willing to take). Its called a false hunt (I Think) and involves following a trail set by a chap trailing a bag of anniseed or somesuch. I have done this (on a horse, if I was running it would have been a very short hunt). Hey, I’ve found a use for hunt sabs (rather than supplying spare livers and kidneys to the hunting set). This means at no real additional cost and the hunts can keep having fun and we can all go and shot foxes on Sundays. All is good (all foxes who want to be assured of a long life should immediately move to London, post code (CENSORED) see my post on shooting). And yes, I know this will be flammed as a towny answer and as a pro hunting answer. Please kiss my ass.
d) Steeplechase (E.G. The Grand National) OK, but I still cant imagine why anyone would risk a horse worth that much for so little money
e) Bullfighting OK. If a man wants be gored let him. And before people shout at me, why is it OK to run with the bulls and then condemn bull fighting? What the hell do you think happens to the bulls. Getting back to the original question though, I have always been more impressed with the portraguise style where they don’t kill the bull. Somehow it seems to suggest more skill and daring, as well as respect to your opponent.
f) Boxing The only sport my father has ever banned all of us taking up! And he was heavy weight champion for southern region (Army) at one point.. Amaturer, hmmmm, ok I can see that. Professional –one word. Tyson. Its got too much. But ban it and it will become..
g) Bare-knuckle fighting Told you so!
h) Cage Fighting Who wants to fight a cage. David keep your personal pecadillos out of these questionaires!
i) Topless Darts ?
j) Dwarf Throwing Leave the NST alone
6) Which of the following publications have you read at least once within the last month? (Score one point for all that apply)

Perhaps you should post a link to the South Park episode 'The Death Camp of Tolerance' (I can hear Lemmiwinks' theme music playing as I type).
I think you're spot on actually Dave - "it was once observed that the people most likely to turn on one like a pack of dogs and string you up from a lamppost for disagreeing with them are self-satisfied liberals who congratulate themselves upon their tolerance"
All the tolerance and as a consequence 'PC stuff' that comes from it always ends up biting people on the proverbial in some way...
Just watch a bunch of queens in any London night club and see them make snide comments as the local bi-guy or lesbian couple walk past. It's quite saddening sometimes...

Re: intoleRANT2
Date: 2004-03-20 05:23 am (UTC)Clothing: Sweatshop labour clothes were one of the things I was going to put on the list but couldn't think of a neat one-or-two word synopsis for them. I covered sweatshop labour in Vietnam about 4 or 5 months ago here and had a good old ding-dong with the usual suspects who try and argue the lefty economic POV at me.
Hunting: My sister rides to hounds and I follow the hunt. Just because something was on the list don't mean I'm against it. Other peoples prejudices are my interest, because most people don't think about what they believe - they just receive the wisdom and act as if it's true because it's what all their mates think too.
Democracy: I'm with Churchill on Democracy - worst form of Govt, exceptiong all the others. The Australians seem to have got it about right.
