In the news this week is a report that a referendum on electoral reform will be held on the same day as the local election next year. David Cameron has said he doesn't support AV, but he won't campaign against it either in respect to his new coalition pals. Instead, he says he takes the whole thing 'incredibly seriously' and wants a thoughtful debate. To trigger this debate, he's released the question that will be asked a full year in advance:

[Poll #1590022]

I am disappointed by the lack of option for an alternative vote system, replacing the entire Sky News punditry team with Octopusses

When Jeremy Vine's electoral holodeck gains horrific artificial sentience, it'll just bore these cool cyberpunk-style tubes into David Dimbleby's head and issue its cruel commands from Dimbleby's Throne of Television Announcing.

Lightning-shooting eyes may or may not be involved.

I was thinking that the boxes Paul chooses from to decide the winner could be filled with stuff that reflects their style of government - the Conservative one would be filled with tasty rewards but you have to work really hard to get it open and there's no guarantee of success, the Labour one contains nothing but we tell him if he picks it there will be lots of rewards later which will magically appear from somewhere, and nobody knows what's in the LibDem box because nobody has ever opened it.

I would think the Lib Dem box looks really good from the outside, but no one seems to be able to get it open to find out whether or not there's actually anything inside.

ION is it just me or does 'Baron Prescott and the Psychic Octopus' sound like a low-budget plot for a Bond film?

Well, his accepting the peerage is apparently the price his missus demanded for him shagging his way through the help when we has a minister.

To be honest, if I can put it about with any passing ladies and all I have to do is get a peerage to keep the she-david happy, I'll be popping a cheque in the post to George Osbourne tomorrow.

Lord Prescott

It was the Telegraph comments thread which asked the question, "has Prescott swallowed his principles?" To which the answer came "he'll swallow anything if it's encased in pastry."

Sorry, but the Psychic Octopus has predicted a loss for the Clockwork Dragon.
That's just the way it is.

It does function as an idiot filters 'tis true. One may posit STV would deliver more stable government than our red/blue oscillations, but Clegg was a fool to be fobbed off with AV. I'll take the octopus.
