It's my birthday.

I'm not really celebrating, because, special though ones birthday is supposed to be, it won't stop me doing a 12-hour working day today - just like most days in fact.

Today is also the first day of lent. In a moment of hubris, I've decided to try and give up booze for the duration. I know that I'm not going to succeed and I've already added a couple of riders to the resolution (I have to go out with clients for occasional drinks for my job, and so I know I'll get let down here), but I'll certainly manage a serious reduction to my intake.
What is everyone else giving up?

Happy Birthday!

Smoking - permanently

Nothing.

Since I'm quite definitely lacking in faith, it feels hypocritical to "do" Lent, so I'm not. I'm with one of the HP slashers in thinking that it should be something you *enjoy* that you give up, rather than using Lent as assistance in (eg) dieting, so I'm not doing it for that reason, either.

Many years ago I made a new year's resolution never to make any new year's resolutions. In spite of the implicit irony, I stuck to it until this year. So don't give up just yet.

Good luck with the Lent thing - a friend of mine give up alcohol every year from December 1st to December 24th - just to prove she can.

Whic seems a good reason to me.

Happy Birthday!

give things up?

there's plenty of things I should give up, but being an aetheist leaves me free to not think about them because of religion...apart from catholic guilt, natch ; )

btw, your other half is a meanie! I was in an ok mood 'til she mentioned Uncle Joe's passing away! *grin*

Happy Birthday, sir.

As I left Christianity behind me about a decade ago now, I don't celebrate Lent. Ho hum.

Ah, I'm so old that I can pass as dead quite easily, so you're more likely to be me.

The purpose of lent is giving up stuff I like, so of course I want to!

However, I'm stoic :)

BTW, You never did say what you got up to on your 24 hours of singledom, and neither did Jenny... ;)
