Junkies.
Specifically, chippy junkies who hang out at Kings Cross and, when you politely decline to give them money, get abusive & threatening.

Note that I say 'politely declined'. I was indeed polite, although I have to say it feels very strange to apologise to a complete stranger for not giving them free money.

Still, I've been reassured that I'm a 'complete fucking pig fuck', and apparently there'll be a small army of junkies on my doorstep in the morning, all ready to do me over.
It's nice to see that the skills of banter and badinage haven't been lost in this day & age...

Perfectly understandable...

Besides the perilous position between man and his food, the economy isn't all that hot and none of these King's Cross itinerants have had the thought to move to Oxford, where one is virtually guaranteed charity. :-)

re: expectation of 'free money'

That reminds me of the first efforts to get the Italians to quit littering their streets. The strongest and most popular objection was that depositing rubbish properly in bins would steal vital work from the street sweepers.

I was asked by a glum homeless person, "Got any change?"
However I only heard... "change".
To which I responded, "Yeah.. I've had a haircut and had a shave, is it noticeable?"
Guy looked at me pretty oddly.

Good, but not quite as good as:

"Got any money?"
"Yes, thanks, lots!"

I often find they are a great repository for the pile of 1ps and 2ps I seem to accumulate. I get to be charitable, they get free money.

For some reason, they don't always appreciate it. My guess is that the coffee shop which sells at 10 pence a cuppa doesn't take coppers.

I guess those South American coffee merchants only deal in used notes, which strikes me as a bit unhygenic.

Still, I understand there is new line in Afghan Brown Powder on the market, apparently they're offering free teaspoons with each sachet. Hooray for market forces.
