I've been sleeping really badly for the last few months.

Any suggestions on how to tackle this? Apart from having a clear conscience, that is.

1) Get blind drunk until you pass out in an alcoholic stupor
2) Background music, I personally recommend 'sounds of the sea' (sounds of waves rolling over a beach) it's pretty damn relaxing
3) Pitch blackness; snuff out every light source completely, darkness (allegedly) assists sleep
4) Horse tranqualisers

there goes my first suggestion - dump the conscience?

Seriously though, I'd suggest meditation?

I haven't done anything conscience-bad in simply ages.
Perhaps I'm slipping.

Any suggestions? Being attached means that I rarely get to be cynical and manipulative any more :(

why not? Be cynical and manipulative at someone else! Find someone you don't like, with a hugely inflated opinion of themselves and tell them some hometruths? Oh - and do that to me and get shot! *grin*

Why, Rhona! You've no more of a hugely overinflated opinion of yourself than I have!

If you are a caffeine drinker, giving up coffee and tea may help. It always zonks me out for a few days and I can sleep for Britain

I was gonna say that -- since giving up caffeine, I sleep loads better and feel much better during the day and am sleepy at night, but not all stretched out like you get when you've drunk too much caffeine.

Also, using your mind more (if, for example, you job isn't very challenging) will make you wanna sleep more, as might doing regular exercise. Having a routine of when you go to bed and when you get up is useful too.

I've been recently thinking on the 'using my brain more' thing; I don't seem to do so much these days, probably because of the job.
As for exercise, I'm a fervent fan of teeh D-plan diet, so that isn't really a problem.

Eat less food. take more exercise.

The 'D' stands for 'Duh'.

There may be something in this; my caffeine intake has rocketted since I started the new job. I'll try sticking to water during the day and see where that gets me.

My main reasons for not being able to sleep are too much light, too much noise (it has to be quiet, music wouldn't work and regular noises like a ticking clock make me mad) and the full moon, for some reason.
Also, having drunk alcohol doesn't help, either.
So pretty much the opposite of what Robin suggestes with one exception...

holistic drugs

Apart from the no caffiene late at night option, lavender on the pillow tends to help people sleep (only a couple of drops) Also there are some herbal sedatives. Chamomile is one of the mildest (and easy to get in herbal tea form) although there are others available from most health food shops.

Also recommended are exercise (and) or a bath abotu 1 hour before you are trying to get to sleep as you relax the muscles and as you cool that mimics the bodies natural pattern when fallign asleep.

Other than that theraputic massage, yoga and all that stuff is meant to help

(does it show I ended up doing my Massage qualification 'dissertation' on Insomnia?)

Sleeping pills.

They aren't a cure, but they do keep you functional if you don't take them every night. (They stop working if you do.)
